I have found MSpaint a useful way of converting the weird image files some of the scientific imaging machines give me into easier to handle/print/open .jpegs and .tiffs.
For some reason, picture viewer never likes them, but i can copy and paste the image into paint and then process it.

also- its fun to make silly pictures with MSpaint in your free time.

The problem is confounded when the browser doesn't support the ability to open a pdf and you're left completely in the lurch. What fun that is!

Marc, thanks for the tip!

I'm not very familiar with AutoHotKey, so I had to do a bit of research. I think I understand how it works, so I'll give it a shot tonight. I'm still grumbling, but that's still a much better solution than what Dell was able to offer...

Maybe you should also consider using AutoHotkey (Open Source) for typing special characters. It’s quite easy to map them to any key combination.

"to translate technical concepts into prose for an array of technical and non-technical users" - Very nicely put.

Technical writing is technically writing, but writing technically is not technically technical writing!

I reference wiki in the lab more then i would care to admit. Often times, just as a refresher for some complex biological process, or even to just get another angle on something i already "think" i know.

I work in a human genetics lab, and we often have the latest instruments and "cutting edge" technology. A downside to that is that the manuals and protocols are often inaccurate, or just plain wrong. Besides wasting my time, such mistakes can result in the wasting of thousands of dollars in reagents, and extremely precious samples. It often seems that in a rush to get the instrument out in the field and to "make the sale", these companies are sacrificing quality.
